The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services and Carson City CASA, in partnership with the RennerVation Foundation, are proud to present the fourth annual Walk Us Home Run/Walk for foster homes and Family Resource Fair on May 9.

The run and walk features four categories: an 8-kilometer run (4.97 miles), a 5-kilometer run (3.1 miles), a 3-kilometer walk (1.86 miles) and a virtual 5-kilometer walk for those who cannot join in person. None of the events are timed.

Race organizers invite participants to wear their favorite hats to reflect this year’s “hats on, hearts open for foster kids” theme.

The event starts at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., and winds through West Carson City’s residential neighborhoods.

Packet pickup begins at 8 a.m. at the Brewery Arts Center. The run-walk and fair follow at 9 a.m. with the awards ceremony slated for 10 a.m.

Rural Nevada has about 60 foster homes serving 400 young people in foster care. Although some counties have as many as 14 homes, some counties have two, one, or none. When communities needing foster homes lack them, children may be sent to outside communities, which triggers other challenges and setbacks.

Race proceeds will support 2026 Camp RennerVation, an all-expenses-paid camp for foster children run through actor Jeremy Renner's charitable foundation.

Each camp session serves approximately 110 youth, identified through a collaborative partnership with DCFS to ensure those who can benefit most have access to the experience. Organizers emphasize that access is a priority, not a barrier.

“We work to make sure every young person who wants to attend has the opportunity, including providing the resources needed to get them to camp,” DCFS Foster Care Recruiter Perla Landa-Munoz said. “Response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. The kids love camp and can’t wait to go back each year.”
Youth often arrive carrying significant challenges, but consistently leave with renewed confidence, stronger relationships, and a more positive outlook. What begins as a difficult chapter is often transformed into a meaningful and empowering experience — one that continues to shape their growth long after camp ends.

Camp RennerVation will host two sessions—one for teens and one for youth—located in Lake Tahoe, California, and Portola, California. The camp is designed as a mental health–focused, experience-based program combining therapeutic support with traditional camp activities such as kayaking, swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, and outdoor adventure.

Through these group activities, campers build meaningful peer relationships while strengthening their cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The program creates a safe and supportive environment where foster and at-risk youth can develop confidence, practice mindfulness, and gain essential life and coping skills that support their overall well-being.

Registration fees begin at $35 and include a race T-shirt and finisher bag. Race-walk divisions include children (ages 10-12), teens (ages 13-17) and adults (ages 18+). Children younger than 10 participate for free with adult registration and supervision. Teams are comprised of at least three people, who can be any age and participate in any event.

To register, visit Walk Us Home - Run/Walk for Foster Homes.

Organizers will award prizes for funniest hat, most creative hat, best matching hats, most spirited person, and most spirited team. A free family resource fair will coincide with the race and walk and run until 1 p.m.
